2019_flood_pre_post_imageryThe Auld-Brokaw Maintenance and Recreational Trail System along Marne Creek sustained severe damage during the March 2019 blizzard and subsequent rapid snowmelt. Once flooding subsided, an evaluation of the damage along Marne Creek within the City limits revealed eroded and sloughed banks, exposed and damaged storm sewer, water line, and bridge foundations, displaced riprap, failed gabion baskets and collapsed portions of the Auld-Brokaw Trail.

Through coordination with FEMA and the SD Office of Emergency Management, the City of Yankton is working to restore Marne Creek and the Auld-Brokaw Maintenance and Recreational Trail System to pre-flood conditions.

Barriers are in place, and signage has been posted along closed portions of the trail.  Repair work is underway and a link to the plan is available here: Marne Creek Reconstruction Plans (PDF). A variety of stabilization techniques will be utilized depending on the stream condition including: gabion baskets, riprap, riprap with willow trees and other tree/shrub plantings, and revegetated natural banks.

From late March 2023, sections of the trail will be closed in order to complete the removals, grading and various repairs.  The construction will continue into July 2023.  The City of Yankton looks forward to reopening the areas to all citizens and avid trail users as soon as safe and practical to do so.
