The Yankton Fire Department serves Yankton, South Dakota and surrounding area, to include Lewis & Clark Lake.  Our service area covers 165 square miles in South Dakota and parts of Nebraska.  

We have over 40 volunteers who respond to fires, vehicle accidents, and other emergencies from three stations.  The volunteers are supported by a full-time Fire Chief and Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal.  Our fleet includes four engines, one ladder truck, three tankers, four brush trucks, a rescue truck, two utility pickups, two chief’s vehicles, and several support trailers.  The department is supported by a very active volunteer auxiliary made up of members’ spouses and family members.

Fire prevention and education play a vital role in our daily operations.  The Fire Marshal conducts plan reviews of new construction, fire inspections, and preplanning to ensure fire code compliance.  Volunteers work with the full-time staff to provide public safety education at schools and throughout the community.  We have a fire safety trailer that travels throughout our part of the state to educate children on how to escape from a fire in their home.

The Yankton Fire Department is the oldest fire department in the State of South Dakota.  We have a museum that is open to the public at Fire Station #2 (201 West 23rd).  The museum houses two of our antique fire engines as well as some artifacts that trace the history of our organization.
