Active Transportation Plan
Active transportation is a solution that connects people of all ages and abilities to where they need to go using active modes such as walking and biking. The City of Yankton currently has a relatively consistent grid of sidewalks but is still missing over 76 miles of potential sidewalk.
With cycling and walking for recreation, errands, school and commuting growing in popularity, the need for a city-wide plan to help guide the development and growth of alternate modes of transportation is increasingly important.
City Staff analyzed areas of greatest need for new sidewalk placement based on objective criteria, determined three years of potential sidewalk projects, discussed funding options, and developed recommendations from their findings and packaged it all into Yankton's Active Transportation Plan.
Yankton's Active Transportation Plan represents an important step toward making Yankton a healthier and safer place to live and work by developing the walking, biking and non-motorized opportunities throughout the community and increasing the safety, mobility, connectivity and access for all roadway users.
The goals of this plan are to reduce and overcome existing barriers to walking and bicycling, to provide connections within and between neighborhoods and destinations that are accessible to all, and to encourage community participation in active transportation.
