Sound the Alarm Event

  • Date: 06/17/2017 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
  • Introduction: The American Red Cross is coming to Yankton to install free smoke alarms Saturday, June 17 from 10am - 2pm.

In partnership with the Yankton Fire Department and Yankton Police Department, the American Red Cross is bringing Sound the Alarm. Save a Life. to Yankton. This partnership is working to help make homes safer and families prepared in case a fire were to break out in their home.

The Sound the Alarm event is being held on Saturday, June 17th but residents need to take action beforehand to receive free smoke alarms.  Residents of Yankton and the surrounding areas can request smoke alarms be installed in their home by visiting www.getasmokealarm.org or texting “Alarm” to 1-844-811-0100.

“Installing smoke alarms cuts the risk of death or injury from a home fire in half, so we want to make sure every home has working alarms,” said Red Cross Executive Director Jennifer Ross. “We are asking people join us to Sound the Alarm by making an appointment today.”

“Besides the lack of a smoke alarm being present in the home, the most common cause of failure of a smoke alarm to operate are missing, disconnected or dead batteries.” said Yankton Fire Chief, Tom Kurtenbach. “Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.  Alarms that are older may fail to alert you of a fire, even with a good working battery installed.  We encourage all Yankton residents that are in need of working smoke alarms to take advantage of this awesome program.”

The installations will happen between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 17th. Volunteers are needed to help with the installation efforts.  Any interested in assisting can contact the Red Cross at 605-336-2448 x2311.

Please join this important effort. Together, we can Sound the Alarm about fire safety and help save lives.
