Riverside Park Play Structure Ground-breaking September 15

The City of Yankton encourages the general public to attend a ground-breaking on Thursday, September 15, at 5:00pm, in Riverside Park for the boundless play area that will be completed by the spring of 2017.

The project will consist of removing all the current outdoor playground equipment (installed in 1989 and which we can no longer order replacement parts for) at Riverside Park and then installing a new play structure and swings with synthetic turf in place for fall material below the entire play area.  By ordering a play structure with ADA accessible swings and having the synthetic turf area it would then become a "universal" or "boundless" play area meaning it would give access to all, even those with ADA mobility issues to use the play structure and swings at their leisure as the play structure itself would allow for mobility devices to “climb” onto the structure through accessible ramps.

The City's goal is to increase the use of the Riverside Park play area by all, but specifically by children and adults with disabilities and special needs.  Our objective is to expand play opportunities for children and adults of all abilities and especially those who face obstacles that impede their full participation in society, bringing children, adults, and families together in a warm, inviting atmosphere of recreation and play.

The boundless play project has been awarded two grants.  One grant is from Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Wellmark Foundation for $10,000.  The second grant is through the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and is in the amount of $40,000.  The LWCF is a federal assistance program to help states and cities provide outdoor recreation facilities.  As a part of the ground-breaking ceremony there will be check presentations.
